Where to Live
Hanoi
The capital, Hanoi, lies on the banks of the Red River. It is a beautiful city that retains an air of French colonialism with yellow stucco buildings lining the streets. For the moment there are relatively few cars and the majority of people travel by bicycle or moped.
Hue City
Hue City is situated halfway between Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City. It was the former capital of the emperors of Vietnam, known for its beautiful imperial architecture. However a great deal of the splendour was destroyed during the Tet offensive in 1968.
Ho Chi Minh City
Situated back from the Mekong River delta, Ho Chi Minh City (formerly known as Saigon) is the main commercial hob of southern Vietnam. It was renamed Ho Chi Minh City in honour of their leader who successfully led the nation in successful campaigns against both France and the USA. Locals often refer to it as Saigon still today. Ho Chi Minh City is more modern than the other cities of Vietnam but it has managed to hold onto its French colonial influences. The streets are packed with mopeds and scooters, often carrying whole families and the markets are chaotically busy. There is really a lot to see and experience in Ho Chi Minh City.
